Here’s a couple things to consider when choosing produce to fit your budget:

1. Shop at your local farmers market - The produce there is cheaper and has less chemicals.
2. Avoid produce imported from other countries. Another rule of thumb: the longer produce has to travel to get to your table, the more chemicals it has.
3. Know which produce has the highest pesticide level. According to the  Organic Consumers Association, the following types of produce have the highest levels and therefore should always be purchased organic:

Farmers Markets

If you think that living frugally means scrimping on healthy foods, or that buying fresh produce is pricey, you really should check out your local farmers market. You can find healthy fruits and veggies at reasonable prices, and if they’re not organic, they will have less chemicals than produce imported from other states or countries.

Check out LocalHarvest.org, an awesome website that helps you locate a farmers market near you. According to the homepage, you can use this “website to find farmers’ markets, family farms, and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area, where you can buy produce, grass-fed meats, and many other goodies.”

You can  also get info on co-ops and various events, buy seeds and other products, and much more.

BJ's Free Trial

If you’re looking to try buying items in bulk and are interested in trying and /or comparing warehouses, here’s a free pass that will give you a 60-day go round at BJ’s. You must activate it at your local BJ’s by July 6, 2009.

Although I’m a member of Costco, I give BJ’s props for taking all manufacturers’ coupons, and making it easier to pay by taking major credit cards and EBT, as well as cash, checks, and debit cards (Costco only takes the last three, and doesn’t take manufacturers’ coupons).

Hopefully BJ’s will decide to offer more healthy and organic grocery choices in the near future. Other than that, they seem to be on the right track to leaving their competition in the dust.
