Blockbuster won no points with many movie makers and fans by censoring their rentals years ago, and now that they’re losing money and closing almost 1,000 stores, it seems they’re copying the business model and marketing strategy of relative up-and-comer, Redbox. Compare the two photos above.

I couldn’t confirm programs being offered by Office Depot or Office Max, but the best thing to do, since these programs are changing as you read this, is to contact your local store and verify what they are offering.

Fresh on the heels of reporting billions of dollars of profits, and shedding the Countrywide stigma, Bank Of America is spiffing up its public image by allowing card holders coast-to-coast access to museums and other fun spots for free.

The bank is expanding its Museums on Us® program, which will now provide cardholders free access to 120 of the nation’s finest arts, cultural and educational institutions during the first full weekend of every month.

Participants include the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. See full list.

All you have to do is flash your ATM, credit or check card and a valid photo ID to gain free general admission. The fun starts this coming weekend, and continues the first full weekend of each month through December 4-5, 2010.

Not sure if this free admission extends to children, and it doesn’t really say on the site, but we will definitely be checking out the Atlanta Botanical Garden and the zoo this weekend!

Grocery Food Auctions

One of the latest, and most unlikely of, crazes coming out of our economic recession is the auctioning of groceries.

Food retailers who are looking to unload excess inventory are now doing business with the auction houses who have found a new market in thousands of families across the country who are looking to make their grocery dollars stretch as far as possible.

The general idea is you can purchase bulk items that may have contained one damaged unit, or are otherwise slightly imperfect, but are still edible and sell-able (though they might be slightly after the “sell by” date). According to Tip Hero, a recent Time magazine reported savings from these types of sales can run anywhere from 25-50%.

The Time article also mentions the auctioneer featured in the video below. The auctioneer, Kirk Williams, whose rural Pennsylvania auctions are extremely profitable, is now planning to expand his booming business into hungry Northeast markets such as New York City.

This new trend seems to be growing in popularity and is effectively taking the place, in part, of bargain chains such as the 99 Cent store, and other retailers who purchased these types of goods and sold them at a discounted price to consumers. Through auctions, the goods move faster and go straight to households, basically cutting out the middle man.
